Gift of Mrs. Sarah Drew Burleigh, January 23, 1942. Manuscript document affixed to back endpaper: "Rev. Joseph Snelling was a very lovable man, gentle and charitable, his strongest words of blame were 'He would better have been asleep.' His sister said he was a handsome attractive young preacher and leader, and his personality drew very many to him and to the religion he loved and lived. When he was eighty he spent some months with his sister in Providence, R.I. and was welcomed gladly by the Methodists there, who visited him often, and sitting by the open fire they would talk of old times and new in their Church, and would always sing and pray. He was a fine singer and a favorite hymn was 'Awake my God, stretch every nerve and press with vigor on-' [??] He died at the home of his son in Bedford, Ohio December 1861 - aged 81 years. This was written in 1941 by the granddaughter of his sister who knew him when she was very small."
