Description

Based on Sir Walter Scott's novel, the two knights on horseback prepare to charge each other with lances on a moonlit night. Colors are muted, predominantly ochre and blue. Signed and dated. Reverse of stretcher bears the Metropolitan Museum of Art's label, listing title and provenance as Robert Weir (father of Emma Weir Casey, who married General Thomas Lincoln Casey, Sr., 1831-1896). Weir was an instructor at the U.S. Military Academy.
