Label

This extraordinary chest is an icon in the history of American furniture. It represents the signature moment that marked the transition from medieval joinery to modern cabinetmaking. It is believed that the William and Mary style arrived in America when the English cabinetmaker John Brocas immigrated to Boston and was working there by 1696. Whether Titcomb saw examples of Brocas's work work or knew of imported pieces of William and Mary Furniture will never be known. But clearly he was aware of the new style and he took an astonsihing leap forward in creating his own example. His pride in the results is indicated by the oversized embellished inscription painted on the back, "Made by Edmund Titcomb."
