Molding of the lower part of the mirror forms two walnut candlestands at the left and right rear corners of the table top. Highlights of the Furniture Collection: The most recent addition to Historic New England's furniture collection, this chest is labeled by John Ellis, a little-known, but important, cabinetmaker who worked from 1850 until his death in 1869 in East Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was the first of a number of furniture manufacturers to set up workshops in East Cambridge, an area that became an important center for furniture production in the years following the Civil War. Ellis started as a cabinetmaker working in a small shop, but by 1860 he had a steam-powered factory and employed around 100 workers.
