Description

Cabinet photographs of Shakers, given by a member of the Sabbath Day Lake Shaker Family in Maine. Taken in the 1880s, the photos are mostly of elders and eldresses from Sabbath Day Lake, along with a few from the Alfred, Maine ministry. They are identified by name beneath each photo. Although the majority of these are posed studio portraits, a few are more informal. They include a tintype of a man holding a team of horses and an elderly woman knitting, probably in a bedroom. Many photographers from Portland and Lewiston, Maine are represented here, as well as Elmer Chickering and J.W. Black from Boston.
