A row of small trees run along the foreground and in the register above, a hearse and gig are led by their drivers. On the bank, in the background, a catalfalque is surrounded by five mourners. Two fences divide the landscape; the top fence posts are surmounted by red coated armed soldiers.

The mourning figures are labeled ""his father"" and ""his mother"". On front of the catafalque it reads: SACRED/TO/THE MEMORY/[of Timothy Dexter] *The words in the brackets is a segment that is barely legible on the image, per NFL.* On a typed white label in the upper right of the back of the mat board is: Attributed to James Fuller who drew/Com. Bainbridge and Gen. Ripley on Lake/Erie in 1816. (See Antiques, Dec.1950,/p.429). This is somewhat imaginary, done/after 1801 when figures on fence were/ erected. Dexter dies in 1806. Mock Funeral of Lord Timothy Dexter,/Newburyport, 1799, showing the tomb/""in one of the banks of the garden is/an elegant new tomb, on top of which is/the Temple of Reason, 12 ft.sq., 11ft./high."" From adv. in Impartial Nbport. On another label it reads: Mock funeral of Lord Timothy Dexter,/held by him in 1799 in Newburyport with/great fanfare. Much of this scene is/fancyful but the event cavsed wide-/spread interest. Picture attrib. to James/Fuller of Lynn on basis of similar topical/scenes. See Antiques, Dec.1950, p.429.
