Small kapa fragment from Hawaii, brownish red with embossed ribbing. This ribbed type of kapa is unique to the Hawaiian Islands and is called kua'ula.. Kapa (the Hawaiian word for tapa) is a cloth made from the inner bark of certain trees and is widely used in the Pacific for clothing and bedding, as well as other secular, sacred, and ceremonial uses.
