Description

Of rectangular format, a portrait of a man, waist length, with black hair, blue eyes and a black coat. He sits in a red upholstered arm chair with his right arm on the table with a green cover. A round ink well and a document are in front of him and he holds a quill pen in his right hand. In the background is a bookcase with three shelves, several lettered "Clark" and one "Spirit of the Pilgrims", vol.IV, 1831. It is in a simple dark stained frame.

In capitals and faded script in yellow paint, in the lower left of the picture is: TAKEN BY G. GASSNER 1834 . In the upper left of the frame back in pencil/charcoal is: Childs Gallery. In the upper left of the frame back in pencil/charcoal is: Boston. In a red bordered jelly label in blue ballpoint, in the upper center of the stretcher is: #C880. On a faded white label in pencil is a label from Doll & Richards, Inc. of Boston, MA with the number C47709. [See file for drawing of the inscriptions and label] In script with graphite/charcoal is: #3 Stearns. In pencil in the upper right of the frame back is: C47709.
