Description

Earthenware, green transfer-print plate with scalloped rim. Printed with "Royal Sketches" pattern depicting a pair of swans swimming in a lake in the foreground and a cathedral on a hill in the background. The scene is encircled by a garter bearing the words "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" - "Evil to him who evil thinks" - a symbol common in British heraldy. The plate has a floral border with includes roses, shamrocks and thistle - emblems of England, Ireland and Scotland under the United Kingdom. Printed on the back of the plate is "Royal Sketches" in a round medallion with crown on top and rose, shamrock, and thistle surrounding.
