Description

Large woven mat, probably from Hawai'i. Likely made with pandanus leaves. Classic "check" method of weaving with diamond-shaped pattern created using dark and light colored strips of plant material. Woven mats are important items in many Pacific Island cultures, extending beyond domestic use to ceremonial and status-related purposes as well.
