Description

The second of three decorative papers once applied to a fireboard (see .1 and .3), printed with both an original image and a reversed image tranferred from another paper. Original paper appears to have been block-printed in three grays, black, and orange on white or off-white ground.The well preserved image of an urn appears to have transferred onto the back of the wallpaper applied on top of it. The transfer image, which appears in reverse, depicts a large urn with lion's head, grape vines, acanthus leaves and other classical motifs. The urn's base is inscribed in script and block-printed with "To Daniel Webster [illegible and missing text] of the Constitution of the United [missing text] from the Citizens of Boston [illegible and missing text]." The print may commemorate the Webster - Hayne senatorial debate of 1829-1830.
