Description

Two fragments of trunk lining from box or chest purchased at auction in Bourne or Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. Fragment (B) is affixed to paperboard. Floral stripe pattern featuring a very large strawberry with leaves. Waterhouse Wallpaper file refers to this as "Strawberry Stripe." Waterhouse reproduced the paper, see 2001.281.298.2. A smaller stripe runs parallel to the large strawberry stripe with alternating leaves and flower seed pods sprouting from the right side of a straight vine. Laid paper, block-printed in red or pink on mustard ground.

"The auction happened to be held on / the day that peace was declared between / Japan + the U.S. Cliff + I were lunching / ...[text lost] a tiny resort on the top of a hill over- / looking the bay at Buzzards Bay when a / ...[text lost] boat went through the canal tooting / its horn, having picked up the first news of / peace on its radio. Every single person at the / luncheon spontaneously left their chairs [and] knelt in prayer. Most impressive! (handwritten)
