Description

Wallpaper border fragment. Dense foliage and a row of roses in full bloom above hanging row of rosebuds. Border pattern is printed over a floral sidewall pattern. The border pattern is block-printed in white and four shades of gray with red flocked overprinting in orange and red. The sidewall pattern is block-printed in white, gray, ochre and yellow on a light green ground. Laid paper; partial sheets.

There is another fragment of this border design printed in greens and pinks over a sidewall pattern of floral medallions on wheat (see 1930.1622, Wallpaper in New England page 144-145). Thus, the border pattern was used over two distinct backgrounds, printed in two sets of colors, to match two different sidewall patterns.
