Label

One of many views of the early United States highlighted in the online exhibit "Patriotic America." Nahant, on a peninsular jutting into Massachusetts Bay north of Boston, became a resort early on, with the first hotel built in 1803. Daily steamboat runs from Boston commenced in 1818, and by 1826 a stage from the Nahant Hotel made connections twice daily with coaches from Boston and Salem. The stone hotel seen here, encircled by wooden piazzas on the first and second floors, was built in 1820. It provided 100 rooms to accommodate the elite of Boston. It proved a popular summer destination until it burned in 1861.
