Description

Fabric backed wallpaper panel probably from "the old paper shop of Mr. Childs" in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Display panel of matching borders and sidewall papers with Neoclassical Arabesque patterns. Moving from top to bottom of the panel, the papers are as follows: a border consisting of several bands architectural molding in grays and taupe; a multi-colored neoclassical frieze with figural urn, griffin, and swags of fabric and flowers; more bands of architectural borders in grays and taupe; a single repeat of a long, multi-color neoclassical side border consisting of small pictorial panels framed by numerous neo-classical figures and motifs; sidewall paper with a pattern of neoclassical figures in light gray on white on either side of the side border; and a multi-color bottom border with mythological figures and creatures, fabric swags and male and female miniature portraits in six-sided frames. The entire piece is framed by strips of gold paper and is tacked to wooden sticks at top and bottom. The papers are block-printed in white, grays, taupe, greens, blues, browns, reds and violets. The frieze, side border, sidewalls and bottom border are printed on white ground. The architectural patterned borders are printed on gray ground.
