On the reverse is a handwritten note which says: ""This was wrought by my great-/grandmother Shaw and must/ be much more than one hundred/ years old. The frame is evidently/cut with a knife, and the pins/ which hold it are the same with/ which she secured it. I wish this/also to be given to Mrs. Thomas/ daughter of Mrs. Herman Melville./1915""
