"Knob from Parlor Door / of the John Hancock house / which stood on Beacon Street near / the State House facing Boston / Common. / House built in 1737 / Demolished in 1863. / Note how much handling and / doubtless faithful polishing have / worn a hole in one end of it." (Black ink)
