Series IX, Lewis Pierce (1786-1874) papers, 1833-1853 (#1.70-1.73), contains documents relating to Pierce's active participation in the civic affairs of Dorchester, Massachusetts, from the 1830s through the 1850s and include three reports from the meetings of the Dorchester town selectmen; Pierce's notes and drafts regarding expenditures for building new school houses; a "Fenceviewer's Assignment" used to settle a boundary dispute between two Dorchester property-holders; and two official documents appointing Pierce as Justice of the Peace. The town meeting reports were copied by Thomas J. Tolman, town clerk, and record Pierce's selection as Surveyor of Highways (1833 and 1835) and Pierce's service as chairman of the Building Committee (1837) in which Pierce oversaw the construction of new school houses (includes labor costs and building materials). The Justice of the Peace certificates appoint Pierce to seven-year terms in Norfolk County (Massachusetts) and are signed by Governors George N. Briggs (1846) and John H. Clifford (1853).
