Series XVI, Lewis Francis Pierce (1809-1888), papers, 1815-1846 (#1.82-1.84), contains a letter received from Samuel P. Hawes (1799-1866), an 1876 mortgage, and a copy of Catechism of Universal History, for the Use of Schools and Families. The letter from Samuel P. Hawes represents enduring kinship ties over time and distance. Hawes was Pierce's first cousin, the son of Ann (Pierce) Hawes (1778-1861) and Jesse Hawes (1770-1808). After the death of his father in 1808, Hawes and his mother returned to live at the Pierce homestead with Hawes' maternal grandfather, Colonel Samuel Pierce (1739-1815), Lewis Francis Pierce (1809-1888), and other family members. Hawes became a merchant, eventually settling in Richmond, Virginia, with his wife and nine children. The letter discusses family news and information about growing tobacco. The mortgage belongs to Lewis Francis Pierce (1809-1888), Frederick Leeds Pierce (1829-1910), and William Augustus Pierce (1827-1905). The book, Catechism of Universal History, for the Use of Schools and Families, by William Mavor (Boston, 1815), is inscribed on the front cover: "L. F. Pierce." The bookplate reads: "The Property of Lewis F. Pierce, Dorchester, 1822," pasted on the flyleaf. The book's cover is protected by a folded paper wrapper made out of a sheet printed with words to music by Handel, Mozart, and others. The series is arranged alphabetically by record type.
