Series XIX, William Augustus Pierce (1827-1905) papers, 1883-1899 (#2.3-2.4), contains a business account book and a program from the reunion and banquet of the Society of California Pioneers of New England. The account book kept by Pierce as a masonry contractor in Dorchester, Massachusetts, contains his business records from the 1880s and 1890s. Individual accounts reveal information on labor and building supplies for various commercial and private projects in Dorchester and the surrounding area. Pierce was responsible for stone, brick, and plastering work. The account book was later reused as a scrapbook around the 1920s; the first fifty-two pages are obscured by newspaper clippings of "Burgess Bedtime Stories" and other stories by Massachusetts writer, Thornton W. Burgess (1874-1965). The 1899 program for the Society of California Pioneers of New England, is a memento from the Society's twelfth reunion and banquet honoring the fiftieth anniversary of the California Gold Rush. The event was held on September 9, 1899, at the United States Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts. Pierce is listed on the back of the program with other members of the Society's Board of Directors. The program includes a dinner menu and a list of 1849 Gold Rush mining camps. The series is arranged alphabetically by record type.
