Pair of slippers cross-stitched in a pattern of scrolling bands and flowers on a black and blue ground in shades of cream, red and blue. Construction details include a rounded square toe, pointed throat; 4-3/4" vamp; black binding; narrow waist; spring heel; white leather and linen lining.

Walk Right In 11/98-3/99 In the mid-nineteenth century, women frequently embroidered slippers for men, who were expected to have them soled by a shoemaker at their expense. Some men were known to complain that they owned too many ill-fitting pairs of slippers, made slightly smaller that their feet as a compliment.
