Description

Rectangular format. Portrait of a young man at waist length with his left arm over the back of a Windsor settee with a red painted rail. Black coat, side-ruffled shirt, black tie with flowing ends, vest embroidered with flowers. In the background is a looped red curtain. It is in its original red-grained frame. Oil on canvas.

Label

Both men and women wore mourning jewelry of various kinds. Men typically wore hair watch chains or rings, but some chose more visible displays. This young Massachusetts man wears a large mourning brooch pinned to his collar.

Inscription

On the lower right reverse of the frame there is a mid-bordered jelly label, fountain pen entry that reads: Young Man/from vici/nity of/Amherst/Mass.
