Description

An archival 3-ring binder containing 171 3 x 5 inch sepia-toned snapshots of the Southern Artery through Dorchester in Boston, Massachusetts. Locations include Gallivan Boulevard, Codman Street, Granville Street, Adams Street, Codman Hill, Morton Street, Marsh Street and Neponset Avenue and Neponset Bridge. Depicts the Southern Artery as it runs through Dorchester ( part of Route 203). Wonderful streetscapes of the triple decker housing, moving houses ( John Cavanagh & Sons Building Movers), construction of the Southern Artery by J. C. Coleman and Sons Co, expert road builders. Dated November 1926 and November 1927. Written on the front or printed on the back of each photograph is a description of the location of the camera and the direction and angle from which it was shooting. Clear details of houses, landscape, streetscapes and automobiles of the period. Storefronts ( e.g. First National Stores grocery chain; Ashmont Motor Co.), pedestrian activity, street signs and automobiles of the period. Additional photographs from this series are in the collection of the Dorchester Historical Society.
