Description

Scrapbook titled "Decoration Inlay Painting." Scrapbook has brown cloth covering and leather labels affixed to spine. Rectangular labels are printed in gold with title, "No. 3" and "A. H. Davenport Co." Scrapbook contains 316 pages, 282 of which are blank. This scrapbook focuses on examples of 16th century to 19th century American and European decorative and inlay work, most of which are illustrations clipped from periodicals and magazines. The illustrations and photographs show the details on larger pieces, such as tapestries, friezes, mosaics, plaster ceilings, Moorish crypts, tombstones, and painted glass, as well as smaller objects, such as trophies, bracelets, and guns. This includes pictures of an early Christian mosaic from 50 CE, murals by Walter Crane, and over sixty reproductions of Old Master works from "The Building News" dated 1893-1894. Only a small number of the illustrations show furniture. Many of the materials appear to be for reference such as the accurate botanical sketches of wild rose hip, chrysanthemum, Canterbury bell, nasturtium, apple tree branches, mount-ash, black bryony, blackberry, and sunflowers. There are also photographs of mounted antlers and a mounted moose head. Several items depict the work of A. H. Davenport including sketches of motifs (pages 33, 63, 75) and sketches of details on ships (77-79). Digital images of a selection of items from the album are attached to this record
