Description

Untitled scrapbook. Scrapbook has red fabric cover and is held together by twine laced through six eyelets. Scrapbook contains 50 pages. The bulk of the materials are clippings from 19th century and 20th century periodicals, catalogs, and magazines, such as "Arts and Decoration," "House and Garden," "Country Life," "Good Furniture," "Furniture Age," "The Architectural Forum," and "The American Architect." The majoirty of the clippings document a wide variety of fireplace mantels in private residences in the United States and England, dating from the 17th through early 20th centuries. Some other European locations are also noted. Names of owners and architects are often provided along with location.

Several names included in the scrapbook are known to have been customers of A. H. Davenport Co., Irving and Casson, or Irving and Casson - A. H. Davenport; however, it is not known if the mantels depicted are the product of any of the firms. These are: Henry Forbes Bigelow (Boston, MA); E. S. Draper (Boston, MA); Economy Concrete Co. (New Haven, CT); J. P. Morgan Co. (New York, NY); and F. W. Wollworth (Glen Cove, NY). Also included in the scrapbook are two photographs of the Peirce-Nichols House in Salem, MA that are copyrighted by Frank Cousins Art Co. in 1913.
