One of many views related to the early United States and its history that appear in the online exhibit "Patriotic America."the Ferry was located on the Schuylkill River, just above the bridge represented on another of Stubbs views. The building to the left was the well-known Mendenhall Inn, a popular pleasure resort for well-heeled Philadelphians. The primitive rope ferry is the type of transportation used as early as 1723. The other houses, partially hidden by the trees, belonged to Joseph Sims and Dr. Philip Physick, a well known surgeon of the time.
