Also known as L'Ecole des Beaux Arts at Fontainebleau, the schools at Fontainebleau combined arts in the areas of music, architecture, and design. Founded in 1923, the school at the historic Chateau Fontainbleau excelled in music and the fine arts. In 1931, the American Conservatory was merged into the school. Providing exclusive training in franco-american inspired beaux-arts, Fontainebleau became a prestigious architectural school for students around the world.
Crandall's other floor plan, "A Modern School," is dated July 12, 1931. This floor plan is probably from around this date. The American Fontainebleau sessions, which continue to be 4 week long summer learning programs, hold a variety of seminars, classes and trips to view architecture. Because of its establishment in 1931, Crandall was more than likely part of the first session of American students accepted into Fontainebleau. These two floor plans are likely examples of his coursework.
