Portfolio -- Ephemera and Photograhs

Description

Portfolio containing containing approximately 101 pieces of ephemera, 57 of which are loose and the remaining arranged by subject in 15 envelopes. Portfolio has brown fabric cover with title "Charles Platt" stamped in gold on front. Contents do not relate to title subject in any way; presumably portfolio was utlized solely for safekeeping. Contents were arranged and some items housed in envelopes by staff of The Strong Museum.

The envelopes contain a mixture of newspaper and magazine clippings, pencil drawings, photographs and photomechanical prints. Clippings include not only images of furniture and interiors but also full articles including: "A Brief Dictonary of English Mirrors: 1660-1800" by R. W. Symonds in The Fine Arts, April 1937 and "The American Scrutoire-Desk: Primitve-Queen Anne -- An Outline of American Furniture: Part X" by Walter A. Dyer in The Fine Arets, April 1932. Also present are nine full-color plates by Edwin Foley taken from "The Book of Decorative Furniture: Its Form, Colour, and History, in Two Volumes," London: T. C. & E. C. Jack, 1910-1911. Digital images of the full-color plates are attached to this record.

Items not in envelopes include loose photographs and unbound photo album pages which depict a wide variety of furnishings. Some of the items shown are the work of Irving and Casson or Irving and Casson - A. H. Davenport Co.; however, the majority of the images are from other American and British furniture makers. Customers noted in these images include: All Saints Church (Worcester, MA); First German Evangelical Church (Pittsburgh, PA); and Ernest Whitworth Marland (Ponca City, OK).
