Bronze commemorative medal for the Battle of Verdun, Februrary 21, 1916. Designed by Parisian medalist S. E. Vernier. Obverse side depicts a bust of Marianne, a woman with helmet, sword and clenched fist, a symbol of the French Republic. Reverse side depicts the Porte Chaussee, the fortified gate to Verdun, wreathed by laurel leaves.
