Pencil Drawing -- Shaving Stand

Description

Untitled design drawing rendered in pencil of a shaving stand. Front view is shown. Stand has an oval mirror with heavy molded rim attached on each side to a supporting column with a spiral twist shaft, rectangular block with inlaid trim, and urn finial. Columns rest on fluted backboard with molded edges, narrow projecting shelf and inlaid patera below shelf. Case below has molded and fluted top edge; three drawers, each with two bail handles; shaped skirt, cabriole legs with acanthus-carved kneees, and ball and claw feet. Handwritten on drawing is "Mahogany $120." Also stamped on front of drawing is "From / A. H. Davenport / 96 & 98 Washington St. / Boston, Mass." Handwritten on reverse is: "Mrs. H. Keyes / 88 Commonwealth Ave." Mrs. H. Keyes refers to Emma Frances (Pierce) Keyes, widow of investor Henry Keyes; her Boston, MA home at 88 Commonwealth Avenue was built in 1881 and designed by Peabody and Stearns.
