Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838) was an early American mathematician famous for his work in ocean navigation. Originally from Salem, Mass, he moved to Boston, Mass in 1823 to work for the Massachusetts Hospital Life Insurance Company. This photo of his home in Otis Place, in Boston's financial district, eventually became the Bowditch Library, where from the 1840s-1850s, it was run by Bowditch's son. Dr. H.I Bowditch.
