One of many views of the early United States highlighted in the online exhibit "Patriotic America."bearing the Governor Eulogy for Dewitt Clinton. The association of Governor Clinton and The Erie Canal is due to Clinton's efforts during his term of office as New York State Governor to arrange the construction of this ambitious project, completed in 1824. This is a companion piece to the Utica Tribute inscription pieces. Some pieces in hollow forms have both inscriptions. There are two forms of the DeWitt Clinton inscription, this one with a blank space before the word Governor, and the other with the insertion of the word "late" before Governor due to Clinton's passing.
