This black and white photo of Caroline Francis Barr's lawn party depicts a delicately pitched tent, covered with flowers and vines. Underneath the tent is a table covered in white, with fine china set upon it. There are at least five adults and two children at the party. Due to the foilage, it looks like a beautiful spring or summer day.

Caroline Francis Barr, a resident of New Ipswich Center Village District, held lavish garden parties at her home, The Barr House, in the late 1800s. Many of her parties were organized in order to raise money for the local library in New Ipswich, established in 1887. It was largely due to Caroline's parties that there was sufficient funding to establish the library in New Ipswich and keep it functioning.
