Description

Small heart-shaped pincushion made from fulled dark blue wool with silk sides. The top and bottom of the pincushion (the woolen sections) are decorated with a polychrome abstract design picked out in opaque white, orange and blue seed beads.

Label

Made by an unidentified Haudenosaunee artist, likely Tuscaora. Haudenosaunee (Mohawk, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora peoples comprising the historic Six Nations Confederacy or Iroquois League) artists combined their skills in traditional beading with contemporary fashions to create souvenirs for sale at Niagara Falls and other tourist destinations.Haudenosaunee beading is still done today. Creating these souvenirs helped perpetuate vital Native cultural heritage.
