TANKARD
"Cherished Possessions": Silversmith Samuel Edwards made this miniature tankard for his sister, Mary Storer, who gave it to her granddaughter, perhaps to mark her birth in March 1757. In addition to making silver, Samuel Edwards sold tools and toys. The estate inventory taken after his death in 1762 includes silver tankards, teapots, thimbles, countless metalworking tools-anvils, hammers, chisels, burnishers, punches-and dozens and dozens of toys including dolls, tin and wood trumpets, wooden beads, whistles, and bird calls.
Engraved on face: M* Storer/to/Mary Smith [* is an approximation] Struck on bottom: S.E [dot is raised] Struck near top to left of handle: SE [upside down]
