Description

Rectangular, vertical format portrait of a man, three-quarter length. He is seated with his right elbow on a desk on which are books, some lettered: "Jackson Nichols" and "Smith Greenleaf". His left hand is in his vest, and he is wearing a brown coat with large buttons, black trousers and white stockings. The frame has sponge decorating.

Inscription

On the upper stretcher of the frame's center, printed on a white label with a black print and partially visible penned entry is: MUSEUM OF ART/RHODE ISLAND SCHOOL OF DESIGN/PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND/LOAN/17/[ripped] 43. On a very old label, now brown with age, in the upper center on the back of the canvas in black print and black penned entry now very hard to read is: Nov.1786 [date almost illeg.] CYRUS FRENCH/GRAFTON/COUNTY WORCESTER/[pen] Aged 30 years/and 6 months. Typewritten on a NFL label with blue lines is: Nov.1786 Cyrus French, Grafton County/Worcester, Aged 30 years/and 6 months. At the bottom of the fram and stretcher bar in the center is incised [with heat?] into the wood: CF . In pencil on the upper back of the frame is: #2690F.
