In a blue ink script on a white blank tag attached to the picture with a hooked on ""L"" is: Aunt Mary Boyd/sister of Adam Boyd/who bought the home/in 1849 - she lived/in this house for many/years. Purchased from/a descendent of the Boyd/family. Typewritten on a white faded label, in the lower left stretcher on the back is: Portrait of Mrs. Mary (Boyd) Minot,/born in Essex in the early 19th century, a sister/of Adam Boyd. After her marriage to Capt. Minot/she lived in Boston where this portrait was pre-/sumably painted. She left most of her property to/her niece Lydia Boyd, and this picture hung for many/years in the Boyd farm at the end of Spring St./Purchased in Essex in 1942. Stenciled on the back of the upper right of the canvas, sideways is: PREPARED BY/A. MORRIS/No. 25/Exchange St./BOSTON .
