While these prepatory drawings are not formally indentified, they may be for a Newport, Rhode Island dwelling.
The drawings are cut from a larger scrapbook and therefore contain additional images believed to be disassociated with the signed watercolor renderings by Joseph C. Wells. This collection includes five drawings and an advertisement cottages and villas rented for the 1866 summer season from the Newport Daily News.

Joseph C. Wells (c.1814-1860) was an architect born in England. He came to New York in about 1839 and soon after went into a brief partnership with another architect, William H. Ranlett. Wells specialized in the Gothic style completing a number of rural gothic style homes, including the Jonathan Sturgis House (1841) in Fairfield, Connecticut and the Henry C. Bowen's Roseland Cottage (1845-1846) in Woodstock, Connecticut, now a Historic New England property.
