Printed on recto--lower center: ""SOUTH VIEW/ OF THE/ Old Holmes House./ The removal of this historical building was a piece of Vandalism committed by Harvard College in June 1884. In the room to/ the right of the front door, the battle of Bunker Hill was planned on the eve of that event, and Benedict/ Arnold here received his commission. The sketching materials in the foreground belonged/ to Annie Dixwell, who interested herself with me in preserving/ mementos of the old house./ V.Y.B.""
