Historical/Biographical Note

Historical/Biographical Note

The marriage of Pauline Cashman and Freeman Condon happened in June 11, 1919 in Newburyport, MA. The couple had known each other long before the wedding. After graduating from school, he joined the army and was sent away with the Navy for World War I where he was assigned to duty in one of the US's largest battleships and latter promoted to lieutenant. She completed her elementary studies in Massachusetts and later graduated Bachelor of Arts from Trinity College in Washington DC. The engagement happened shortly after Freeman's return from war, and the wedding was a year later. The ceremony had a certain level of prominence which can be noted by the long article on the local newspaper, Newburyport Daily News, dedicated to the event. In this collection can be found information about the whole matrimonial process, from the engagement announcement to the honeymoon, evidenced by letters, lists, photos, and other objects.
Besides evidencing some of the customs of American marriages in the early 20th century, the collection also reveals some interesting trends from the period such as presenting the couple with crystal gifts. From the 194 presents listed by Pauline Cashman in her gift book, 58 were made of the material. Moreover, the letters collected also show that the couple were united in a loving marriage rather than an institutional one, in accordance with all the progress from the period.
