Description

Men's red wool coat lined with red silk. Turnover collar, no revers. Nine metal buttons with two working buttonholes (other holes are false.). Coat has two pockets with pointed flaps. Simple cuffs with lace ruffles at wrist (added later). Single breasted waistcoat [b] of red wool lined with red silk. Wool back panel with vents at sides and back. Twelve metal buttons and twelve working buttonholes. Waistcoat has two pockets with pointed flaps.

Label

"Mementos: Jewelry of Life and Love from Historic New England": After serving as a captain in the Revolutionary War, Thomas Warland became a successful tailor in Cambridge. In 1782 he married Elizabeth Bell of Boston in this coat, which he most likely made himself.
