Black oilcloth envelope-shaped case with linen tape button closure and black enameled metal button, lined with cotton rollerprinted in design of US flags and cannons. Sewn to the front interior rim are several wool needle "pages" containing needles and attached thread. Inside the envelope is a piece of paper with an inscription "Henry T. Chace/Housewife/Civil War." A separate needlebook with patterned black velvet covers lined with light blue/green silk containing a single blue plaid needlepage also sits inside the huswife.
