Armchair. Walnut, ebonized walnut trim, burled maple panels, and trim. Velvet upholstery. Bergere form with round seat, outwardly flared arms, and rectangular flaring back. Seat, back, and arms upholstered with tufted mustard-colored velvet with grosgrain ribbon trim at base of seat. Chair skirt features walnut with central gilt palmette and carved gilt vegetal scroll decoration. Entire skirt pattern has burled maple panels framed by gilt, and applied ebonized walnut rosettes. Ebonized walnut trim at base of skirt. Ring and column turned legs with gilt and ebonized walnut details.

Renaissance Revival

"Cherished Possessions": Like the library table to the right, this chair is in the Renaissance revival style, a style which was developed in France in the 1840s and reached its heyday in America in the 1860s and 1870s. According to family tradition, the chair and table were made by the donor's father, Parisian-born cabinetmaker Felix Gendrot. Gendrot's partnership of Gahery, Gendrot & Co. received the Premium Gold Medal at the 1853 exhibition of the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association. The chair was part of a suite of elaborately upholstered furniture that included a sofa and several chairs.
