Chest
Intricate, cloud-like shaping in the brackets of the feet and neatly crafted moldings add visual appeal to this simple yet finely made eastern Massachusetts chest with drawers produced around the years 1750-1775. Found in the attic of the Boardman House, a Historic New England property in Saugus, Massachusetts, this chest once held the tablecloths, blankets, and towels of a household. Painted red like much Massachusetts furniture of its period, the piece lacks the applied moldings that provided the appearance of two false drawers. However, the craftsmanship of its feet and neat drawer moldings compensate for the absence of exterior detail.
