This mug displays a satirical print depicting Napoleon's escape from the Russian army after his failed invasion of that country. He reportedly fled the town of Syzmesk, after the Battle of Berezina, reported in the 1813 London Chronicle as a narrow escape out a window. It is one of several pieces made in Staffordshire, England known to display this image. See comparable example in the Victoria and Albert Museum's collection.
