"Cherished Possessions": The room which contained this floor panel was described in Miss Leslie's Card Game for Young People of Famous Boston Buildings of 1831, long after it was built, as “probably the most expensively finished room in Boston.” The room had a marble fireplace, lavishly carved and gilded columns, a dozen painted landscapes including the two to the right, and an unusually decorative floor made of parquetry, small interlocking pieces of wood. The central portion of the floor, seen here, had the three swans of the coat of arms of the Clark family, the building's first owner.
The house was razed in 1833. A few fragments of the spectacular parlor are all that survive.
