This fabric was likely made for the 1876 United States Centennial. The shields reading "PEACE" are in the shape of the Union Shield which gained popularity during and after the Civil War. The shield was also used heavily during World War I. The lines of music printed on this fabric are believed to be a small, repeated phrase from the song "Hail. Columbia" (The President's March) by Phillip Phile and Joseph Hopkinson.
