"Cherished Possessions": Trade with China played a key role in the development of the New England economy in the last years of the eighteenth century. This table, constructed in a fashionable English shape and decorated with highly prized lacquer, was ordered for his own use by the Boston, Massachusetts, merchant Theodore Lyman. On their outward journey, Lyman's ships collected furs from Northwest Coast Indians to resell in China; they returned with cargoes of silks, porcelain, tea, and luxury furnishings to sell in New England.
