Walk Right In 11/98-3-99 The practice of concealing a shoe within the walls around windows and chimneys to protect a house from evil spirits dates back to medieval Europe. This tradtion continued in New Enlgand until at least the end of the nineteenth century. Children's shoes, like this one found between the plaster and chimney in the Daniel Green House in Stoneham, Massachusetts, were preferred to adult shoes.
