Seated three-quarter portrait of Augustus Lord; brown hair, blue eyes, long sideburns; sharply pointed nose; wearing dark overcoat with V opening in front; underneath, white unbottoned shirt with white scarf tied high around neck, bow in front; holds letter in his left hand sealed with red wax; in front are two open books with feather pen in stand; seated in red upholstered chair with wooden crest; column behind him with red drapery at upper corners; molded gilt frame with thumbprint motif around inner edge.
